Wet Sample Preparation for Laser Particle Size Analyzer – Part 2

Sampling & Loading

l  Observe first 30–60 s: drifting obscuration may indicate dissolution or swelling.

l  Avoid foaming: add sample along the tank wall.

l  Representative sampling: homogenize, pipette from ~1/3 above bottom, transfer completely.

Special Samples

l  Water-soluble powders: use saturated solution method, measure quickly. Small particles dissolving → D50 biased large, D90 biased small.

l  Swelling materials (clay, cellulose, starch, SAP): prefer non-aqueous media, shorten measurement time, or consider dry dispersion.

QC Checkpoints

l   Obscuration: keep 8–12%.

l  Repeatability: D10±2%D50 ±1.5% D90 ±3%

Cleaning & Compatibility

l  Flush and clean sample cell/flow path immediately after use.

l  Strong polar solvents (e.g., NMP) → only use with PEEK/PTFE/stainless steel.

l   Improper solvent use or cleaning may not be covered under warranty.
